Overview
Switch-mode power supplies, uninterruptible power supplies and industrial power converters rely on aluminum electrolytic capacitors for energy storage, hold-up and filtering, and the capacitors are often the limiting factor for the life of the supply. Choosing capacitors with enough ripple rating and a long enough life at the real case temperature is therefore a design decision, not an afterthought. Nippon Chemi-Con screw-terminal and snap-in capacitors serve this role, and BeiLuo supplies them with genuine traceability and FAE support.
Primary Bulk Capacitance
A switch-mode supply rectifies the mains and stores the energy in a bulk capacitor before the switching stage. That capacitor carries a large ripple current at twice the line frequency plus the high-frequency ripple of the switching stage, so its ripple rating and its life matter. A 105 °C snap-in capacitor with a high ripple rating, such as the KHT series, suits the dense primary stage, and its 450 V rating provides margin for a rectified high-voltage bus. Snap-in terminals mount directly on the board, which simplifies assembly and saves space compared with a clamp-mounted can.
Ripple and Temperature
The ripple current heats the capacitor, and the case temperature plus the ripple heating sets the core temperature and thus the life. Keep the ripple within the rating at the expected case temperature, and derate where the capacitor will run hot. Spacing the capacitors for airflow and placing them away from the transformer and the switching devices are the simplest ways to extend life.
Output and Low-Voltage Rails
The output of a low-voltage supply needs a large capacitance for filtering and transient support, and a high-capacitance snap-in part such as the KMH series fits a compact 30 mm can while providing very high capacitance. This keeps the output impedance low and the transient response tight, and it holds the rail up during a load step. The same approach applies to a 24 V industrial bus that feeds several converters.
UPS and Hold-Up
A UPS stores energy and holds the load up during the transfer to the battery or the generator, and the bus capacitor bank is central to that function. Here a screw-terminal capacitor is common because the current is high and the capacitance is large, and the busbar connection makes the bank straightforward to build. Sizing the bank for the required hold-up time and the acceptable voltage drop is a key step, and the ripple rating and the life must be checked for the duty.
Selection and Supply
Selection starts with the voltage, the capacitance and the ripple, then narrows by case size, terminal type and life, choosing a snap-in part for a dense board and a screw-terminal part for a high-current bus. BeiLuo keeps mainstream Nippon Chemi-Con capacitors in regional stock, ships them with import declaration, certificate of origin and RoHS documents, and supports ripple, hold-up and lifetime design with an in-house FAE team. From a compact supply to a large UPS, our engineers help you choose the capacitors that keep the converter reliable and the rails stable.
